“Tommy? Tommy? Why am I here, Tommy?”

Silas clenched his jaw and went to his mother’s side. She was sitting on the couch, pulling on the skirt of her dress, looking scared and bewildered. “You’re home, Mamm,” he said, trying to take her hand.

She snatched it from him. “Who are you?” she said, backing away from him.

“I’m Silas,” he said, for the tenth time in the past hour. He glanced at the front door. Where was his father? At supper Daed said he needed to take a walk. Silas understood why. Daed needed a break. Mamm had been agitated all day, and it had gotten worse when the sun went down. Now Silas wasn’t only worried about his mother, but his father too.

“Silas? Where’s Tommy?”

“I don’t know,” Silas said absently, glancing at the small clock on the mantel of their fireplace. Daed had given Mamm the clock as a twenty-fifth wedding anniversary present almost ten years ago. It was nearly eight thirty. He gritted his teeth. Faith would be furious with him for being so late, but it couldn’t be helped. He couldn’t leave his mother alone, not even to go find his father. “Mamm,” he said, lowering his voice and speaking softly like he’d heard his father do. “It’s bedtime. You must be tired.”

“I’m not tired.” She stood and walked away.

Silas followed her. She went into the kitchen and started throwing open drawers. Silas shut them behind her. The medicine wasn’t working. This was the worst he’d seen her. “Tell me what you’re looking for and I can find it for you.”

“Spoons,” she said, opening the drawer that held the silverware. She stared at it, then walked away.

“The spoons are right here.” Silas grabbed a handful and showed them to her.

She pushed his hand away and sat down at the table. Then she stared straight ahead.

“Lord, please,” Silas whispered, his voice cracking. “Please help her.”

He heard a knock on the front door and froze. His mother didn’t move, just gazed straight ahead with an empty expression. Should he answer the door? If his father were here, he would send whoever stopped by away, especially with Mamm being like this. Could Silas even leave her to answer the door? He decided to ignore it, even when the knocking grew louder. When it stopped, he breathed a sigh of relief and leaned against the table. “Mamm?”

She didn’t move or say a word.

“If you think I’m going to put up with yer irresponsibility, think again Silas Graber!”

He spun around at the sound of Faith’s shrill voice, then groaned. He didn’t need this right now. “How did you get in?”

“Yer door is unlocked.” She narrowed her gaze. “I knew you were ignoring me.”

Silas went to her, hoping he could calm her down. She had a right to be mad, but unlike in the past, he hadn’t not shown up out of carelessness. “Faith, it’s not a gut time—”

“It never is, is it? You always have an excuse for going back on yer word. This is a job, Silas.
